Level 2: Add & Subtract on the Abacus (Ages 6–8)

From direct bead moves to the Small Friend, Big Friend and Family formulas.

Level 2 is the heart of abacus mathematics. Ten chapters move from direct addition and subtraction to the complement formulas that let a child add or subtract any digit without ever running out of beads. Every problem is generated fresh, so practice never repeats.

Chapters 1–3 (direct earth and heaven bead moves) are free — the formula chapters are Premium

The 10 chapters

  1. 1

    Earth Add

    Free

Push earth beads — results 1 to 4.

  2. 2

    Heaven Add

    Free

Add with the heaven bead — direct moves only.

  3. 3

    Earth Subtract

    Free

Earth beads only — the heaven bead never moves.

  4. 4

    Heaven Subtract

    Premium

Subtract 5 and more — push the heaven bead away.

  5. 5

    Meet Formulas

    Premium

Reference table: why, when and how to use bead formulas, with animated examples.

  6. 6

    Small Friend +

    Premium

    +1 = −4 +5 · +2 = −3 +5 · +3 = −2 +5 · +4 = −1 +5

  7. 7

    Small Friend −

    Premium

    −1 = +4 −5 · −2 = +3 −5 · −3 = +2 −5 · −4 = +1 −5

  8. 8

    Big Friend +

    Premium

    +1 = −9 +10 … +9 = −1 +10 — carrying to the tens rod on a two-column abacus.

  9. 9

    Big Friend −

    Premium

    −1 = +9 −10 … −9 = +1 −10 — borrowing from the tens rod on a two-column abacus.

  10. 10

    Family

    Premium
